I make a wide range of furniture from personally sourced wood. Most of what I use will be old roof rafters, floor joists and floorboards. In keeping with the recycle and re-use ethos, I try and use the history of the wood's previous job to enhance the furniture.
Along with making funky, practical and rustic furniture for the home, I have been commissioned to make furniture for The Guardian newspaper, for their tent at Glastonbury. I have crafted a piece for the art collective "The Light Surgeons", for a installation they produced in the Geffrye Museum. I have also produced several items for west end shows.
Most of the timber I use will have been growing for hundreds of years and then spent a hundred more seasoning in a roof or as another part of a building. The strength and beauty of old long growth timber can not be compared to the modern fast grown product.
I think we all know the problems of the planet and that we need to all do our bit to recycle and re-use as much as we can. For over ten years now I have been liberating timber from skips, building and demolition sites across the South East. This reclaimed timber would otherwise end up in a land fill or be burnt, releasing the stored co2 back into the atmosphere.
